Koger Center Presents: Jazz for Young People” in partnership with Colajazz will take students on an interactive adventure tracing the history of jazz and its origins while examining the characteristics and intricacies of various jazz styles, highlighting contributions of important performers and composers, and exploring the social, economic, and political contexts in which jazz evolved. From scat singing and improvisation to experimenting with rhythm and syncopation, students will play a participatory role in the performance by becoming a special part of the ensemble to cultivate an authentic impression of the essence and structure of the music. Major jazz styles will also be performed and illustrated by the six-piece Colajazz ensemble, and students will journey through Swing, Bebop, Dixieland, Latin, Free, and Modern forms to deliver a vibrant program fostering and promoting the sheer magic and diverse intricacies of the storied genre of jazz.
