WOLFGANG & WINE returns to the Koger Center! Join us for a pre-concert wine tasting event, and then prepare for an unforgettable evening of music with the SC Phil as they perform Mozart’s final composition: Requiem. The concert opens with a contemporary work by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, whose music is performed by prestigious ensembles around the world. La Calaca was inspired by the variety of traditions that shape the Mexican Day of the Dead festival. Principal Horn Ken Turner comes to the front of the orchestra to perform Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1. Finally, audiences will experience the power and grandeur of Mozart’s Requiem. After his death, Mozart’s widow Constanze claimed that throughout the composer’s last painful days he believed he was writing the Requiem for his own funeral. He was. Even though it had to be completed by his contemporaries, the circumstances of the composition, united with Mozart’s genius, renders it an unconventional work that has the drama and humanity of Mozart’s stage masterpieces. His operas wrestle with the splendor and complexity of being alive in the same way his Requiem grapples with the mystery of death. Composed by a man on the edge of consciousness, Mozart willed his last creation into life with his final breaths.
