The Palmetto Opera Presents
Giacomo Puccini's
Tosca
Featuring Teatro Lirico d'Europa
One of the best loved of the Puccini’s operas, Tosca will be performed in the original Italian with English super titles projected above the stage.
Tosca is set in Rome in June 1800, when Rome is threatened by Napoleon's invasion of Italy.
It is a tragic and political love story. Tosca explores how love overcomes all.
Mario Cavaradossi, a painter, is deeply in love with Floria Tosca, a famous singer.
Scarpia, the chief of police, has arrested Cavaradossi and proposes a deal to Tosca that if she
gives herself to him, he will free her lover. Come see how this famous Puccini opera with
its lyrical outpourings unfolds.
Making Opera Part of South Carolina
The Palmetto Opera, now in its ninth season, incorporates Midlands-area opera professionals and students in its full opera productions and monthly Opera Thursday performances. Opera Thursday is performed the first Thursday of the month and features local and regional opera singers. Performances are at Villa Tronco restaurant in Columbia and other venues throughout the year. The Palmetto Opera’s educational program for high schools gives students an introduction to the world of opera and the experience of live grand opera.
Columbia had not had a professional opera season in over 28 years when The Palmetto Opera began in 2011. People from over 28 zip codes outside of Columbia attended its last production, The Barber of Seville in February 2018 at the Koger Center for the Arts.
